I’ve adopted my life motto from the words of Annie Dillard, who says, “How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.” I try my hardest not to get ahead of myself and to live life one day at a time, traveling lightly, as G.K. Chesterton advises. I have a bad habit of reading too many books at one time. I adore cookbooks and read them like one would read novels. It’s weird, I know. I love black and white stripes and all things yellow. I believe coffee is best black. Second to the french press, but nonetheless essential in my kitchen, is my microplane zester, because freshly grated nutmeg makes french toast so much better. I always want breakfast, no matter what time it is—and I never know what time it is.
